January 31, 2007, 8PM: Played 10 hours, Made $1,706.00 at Bay 101 - San Jose
$20/40 Texas Hold'em

This was an interesting session.

I showed up early in the morning 3:30am, with the intention of getting some coffee, a bite to eat and a small win before my drive.

The decision to play 20-40 was a tough one as my performance has not been the best lately, but I am tired of grinding lower limits and wanted to play "real" poker.

I jumped in and gave the game my all.  Playing extremely well and patient and paid extreme attention to players and their holdings.  Then, this tournament started and half the tables where breaking.  They moved our table and combined it with the other table and new players.  I racked up my chips and moved to the other table up $800.  This was when I should have left.  I achieved my goals, what was I trying to gain?

Once the new game started I started to come off my chips.  At one point I was only up $300 and had come off of $500.  I debated with myself to leave now with the smaller win or give back another $300 trying to chase what I already had won.  This is mistake number two.  My mind set was all wrong.  I was more concerned with getting back to where I was than playing the best poker of my ability.  I think we do this a lot as poker players.  We want to get even, or win this session what we lost last session, or get back to some amount that we peeked out at.  It is like we get fixated on achieving some dollar amount and this is a mistake and I was guilty of making it.  At one point I ended up down $100 and took a break.

I told myself during this time to forget about the $800 I was up.  I was mad at myself for doing this but knew I had to get over it.  I wasn't playing my best but playing to try and earn back what I had given back.  I told myself to forget about it, like it was a past session, this was a new one and I would play the best I could.

I returned to the table and it was passive/tight with two weak players holding all the chips.  I continued to play my "A" game getting nowhere and knew I had to liven these two guys up.  So I started attacking their big blinds with any hands.  The two players on my left, when the two donks were in the big blinds, were extremely tight(not calling stations), so when they came in I knew I was in trouble but knew about where they were at.  I was playing like "Jesse" again.

It turned into a war with those two "donk" players in the big blinds.  They would defend with any two cards and it got their chips flowing.  Which in turn got the rest of the table on edge and jumping in the action.  I also pressed my wins to fabricate a rush.  Meaning, if I won a pot and the next hand was decent I would auto raise pre.  You can only do this with a super tight table like I was at.  It caused players to come after me and loosen up.  But I would miss and muck or hit and ram and since they could not put me on a hand, like before, it gave me added value of deception.  Like this one time I attack for the 3rd pre raise in a row with A4s, flop 449 and someone has JJ thinking they own me.  Normally, I should be holding AK, AQ or a pair.  Since I won that pot the very next hand I raise pre UTG with Q6 off.  6 players call and although I know it is a "waste" of $40 and I missed the flop the game is now on fire.  Players are reacting to me and playing poorly against me.

A few hands later I pick up KK and 3 bet one of the guys I'm doing battle with.  He has AQ and we see a flop of AQ2.  He tries to trap me and missed a check raise on the turn, when he does bet out on the river I catch my K to win the pot.  Had he just played normally he would have taken the pot down.
I was dominated

I don't worry the rest of the session about how much I am up but concentrate on maximizing my win/loss per hand.

Like this one hand with 89s 4 way.  Flop is Q82, and I am in the BB.  The maniac bets, get one caller and I call.  The turn is a K and we three check.  The river is a Q and I check again, he checks and the button now bets.  What the hell can he have? Had he had a Q or K he would have bet the turn or raised the flop.  He has shit and I know it.  I should call, or should I? What does the bettor on the flop have? He would have value bet the river with a Q and most certainly bet the turn with a K, I put him on an 8 as well, and he should tie me if he calls and beat me only with A8.  This is were I raise the bettor on the river.  He bet 55 thinking it was good, I show 89 and take down the pot.  The flop bettor had J8, like I thought, and would have split announcing, "Nice raise".  Before, only worrying about not loosing money, I would have called and split, but now that I am really paying attention and not fearful of losing I scoop.

I continue to play aggressively and take a nice win out of the game.

Another example of me sleeping at the wheel was earlier I had 36 in the BB in an unraised pot.  The flop came down 36J.  I checked 5 ways and we saw an Ace roll off on the turn.  This ultra aggressive player bet out from the SB and I raised.  We get a cold call behind me and now the bettor three bets, I auto muck not thinking.  The cold caller wins the pot with A9, one pair 9 kicker, the agro 3 bettor had A7.  Had I hesitated and given it some thought I would recall this guy pushes weak hands super hard and likes to check raise made hands.  Had he made two pair on the turn he would have check raised the turn.  Although at the time it was a bad fold considering there was a cold call behind me and I am certain the 3 better had an Ace the chances of me still having the best hand on the river with bottom 2 was quite low.

All in all a good session.  In games like this I should play more with my heart and mind, I call it fire.  The 20-40 there is a great game and I should jump into it more often.

January 30, 2007, 4AM: Played 3 hours, 12 minutes, Lost $120.00 at Bay 101 - San Jose
$120 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (14th out of 83 Players)

This tourney the blinds went up quickly and the starting chips were not generous.  By the 4th round it was pretty much a crap shoot.

I grind and grind after a bad start.  Get down to 5 chips with a 2-4 chip blind.  Pick up 55 and triple up.  Then pick up AK and triple up again.

After that I was barely keeping up my stack with the blinds increasing.

With blinds of 3-6 chips and having 20 chips I pick up TT in the small blind.  A guy in early position raises all in .  I call and am happy to see his AT, have him dominated, Odds to Win

I always get a bad feeling in this situation, the better I have it the more likely I loose.  Had he had AKs I strangely would have felt more confident.  Board comes bricks and he is drawing dead to an ace.  Unsurprisingly one comes on the river and I'm on the rail.

Oh, well, the odds are against me this year.

What annoys me most about this hand is not that I lost, but that some monkey got rewarded for a horrible play.  Who in their right mind goes all in with a decent stack in early position with AT off?

DeDobber played this tourney with me and had the same misfortune of some idiot making a bad play and getting lucky. Dedobber's Post
His situation was a bit worse though in the fact that this morron had a huge stack and went all in under the gun with 67s.  Who in there right mind risks their whole tournament life on a 67s only to gain the blinds that he doesn't even need?

Guess that is low buy in tourneys for you.

January 28, 2007, 4AM: Played 5 hours, 36 minutes, Made $3,407.00 at Meetup.com
$250 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (1st out of 20 Players)

My friend showed me this website called meetup.com, after looking around I found this poker group at www.Meetup.com It is really a cool website.  People meet from all over the country to participate in all kinds of activities.

I decided to go and bought a seat($250 value) for only $175 from a kind player Luke.  Most all other players besides Michelle won their seat by playing $25 satellites weeks before.  I ended up winning the tournament.  I tipped another $40 costing me a total of $215 and I really don't know how to log this.

1st place pays a seat valued at $10,000 to play in Las Vegas.  Since I am not getting any cash back I consider this a loss until I see some green.

I will be playing for the San Jose Kings in the California Conference in Las Vegas.  I don't know much of anything about this event.  For more information visit this site, US Poker League.  The idea is cool though.  There will be 25 cities(teams) made up of six players per team.  We will play 5 teams at a time on 3 tables, 30 players in total.  Your team goal is to be one of the top 3 players for your table, then they take the those top 3 players to have a final table 9 handed.  The trick of the whole situation is 2 players per team will be on a table and collusion and soft play is semi-allowed/encouraged.  You have to read more about the rules and tournament play on the FAQ page.

So, the tournament that won me this privilege.  I was at a perfect table to start.  Started at a very passive readable table with not much risk.  At the other table we constantly heard "all-in".  Also, this young savvy aggressive player that was at my table got moved there, which was a good thing since he was a threat.  A bit later I got moved into the risk/shark tank and went on a tear.  Knowing that it is "winner take all" I played a few hands differently than normal.  One being AK, I raised in early position, got one caller on my left and then the SB went all in.  I saw that my caller will, and had to, call the all in, but preferred my hand heads up and to trap his dead call.  I re-raised all in and made him make a decision.  He layed down JJ!!! The SB had I think 55, small pair.  The flop came down like TT2 turn A river A.  Had I let the caller in on my left and he moved all-in on the flop I may have had to fold, not sure.

After that I had a good amount of chips and was playing very aggressively.  I could feel the fear of the other players and also was hitting flops/hands.  btw, we started with 10K in chips and 20 minute rounds blinds at 25-50, a ton of time and chips.  When we consolidated to 1 table I slowed down a bit.  I actually went outside to answer a few phone calls and take a breather.  I've gotten too many big stacks quickly like this, got overzealous and screwed it all up.

Before I new it we were down to 5 players. Luke was on my left, a very strong player with little less than average chip stack.  On his left was Michelle, an aggressive player, hard to read, but able to trap post flop.  I can't remember the kid's name to the left of her, but he had a nice stack but was weak/tight pre flop and very readable post flop.  Then there was our organizer(Bert) on my right who had an ok chip stack but was going to be hard to pry those chips from him.

My major swing was with 23s in the SB, everyone folded and I decided to limp.  Luke, in the BB, just doubled the BB.  I felt like I could outplay him so I called.  Flop came down 56Q.  I planned on check raising him on the flop or check calling the flop, then bluff betting the turn.  I put him on Ax or Kx suited.  He bet again the minimum.  So I called.  The turn was my miracle 4 giving me the straight.  I checked, and to my surprise he went all in.  I auto called and he showed Q8, still drawing live to a 7 for a bigger straight.  He was shocked to see my 23.  Had he bet more on the flop I would have reconsidered my options and most likely layed the hand down.

Now I was looking great with only 4 of us left.  Michelle on my left was running low on chips and kept moving all in at the right times.  This next hand I played was just classic.  I was in the SB with 89 off.  The kid limped, our host limped and I limped.  Michelle moved all in from the BB for about 18K more, the total post at this time is about 25K.  I loved this move by her and live to make it myself when I am in this situation.  She is either going to go broke, have everyone fold and more than double her stack or get one caller, get lucky and triple up.  The kid folded and our host hesitated, as he did I took a good look at her.  Her body language was pure fear.  I'd seen her move in enough all day to see when she was genuinely comfortable with this move.  This time she was not.  Our host folded and it was on me.  I only had 89 high.  My gut told me to auto call but I had to let my brain think about it for a half of a second.  I can put in 18K to win about 43K.  About 1:3, even if she had AKs I would be getting proper odds,
AK vs 89 odds
.  I also was considering that if I win this son of a bitch they will have no chance to beat me 3 handed and me having 70%+ of the chips.  Most importantly to mention, I feared Michelle the most and wanted to take her out.  She plays unpredictable, was on my left and is ultra aggressive, not a great combo for me.  I had about 55K in chips and could fade the 18K.  If I folded she would have 43K, if I called she would have either zero or 60Kish.  I also knew 100% she did not have a pair but some piece of shit hand.  My cards were live.  I announced, "I have a strong feeling you are making a move, my cards are live, I call" and I slipped 18K into the pot.  She announced, "You are right, good read!" and to my surprise she rolled over 95 off!! How wonderful is this?! Here are my odds She should win about 1 out of 5 times and we should chop 1 out of 5 times.  So really, about 40% of the time I will be disappointed, lol.  We flopped a 9, turned a blank and rivered the 5!!! This is brutal for me, but I don't give a shit.  I've seen so many hands beat me.  I was just super happy with myself to make the right read, go with my gut, reanalyze the chips/odds and then have the balls to execute this play AND be right.  The outcome, yeah it sucked, but what is new?

Some hands later Michelle started coming off her chips to the kid.  Then the kid is on the button and makes a major mistake by just limping and letting me see the flop in the BB.  The flop was AQQ.  Our host checked, I checked and he bet 8K.  Host folded and I, holding Q4 decided to double his bet.  I was 90% sure he held and Ace.  With the flush draw on the board he should not put me on trip Q's fast playing it.  He auto called and we saw a blank 7 roll off the deck.  I bet out 10Kish and he went all in.  Now I was a bit concerned, but from the flop I thought to myself, "If he has Q better kicker... so be it, I can't lay this down", plus with the ace on board if he did have say QT I still could hit 13 cards to tie and 3 to win.  Regardless, if he had the Q he would have checked the flop or moved me all in when I check raised him.  He rolled over AT and was a bit stunned to see a Queen come out of my hand.  This busted him, later when I spoke to him about this play he mentioned my check raise was what threw him off.  He is used to people on draws or holding a weak hand to make this check raise on the flop play. Players with my hand usually check call the flop then try to check raise the turn.  What I call the typical rookie donkey play.

We took a break and upon returning I see Michelle had just above the BB and our host(Bert) had a bit less than me.

Michelle is committed in the BB, Bert doubled the blind on his button which forced me to lay down T4.  Had he called I could have called as well and taken 2 hands to her one to try and bust her.  She doubled up, then doubled again.  I avoided the two of them and picked my spots to nab up some blinds.  She came back to bust him when they were in the blinds, her with 9T or something when he had 52 and a flop of 359 I believe.  Now this was my worst nightmare.

An aggressive, risky player, heads up and I have about 65% of the chips.  Meaning.. I couldn't lose one race or else she would have had 70% of the chips and me only 30% and in deep doo doo.

I did my best to be ultra cautious, making precise raises pre flop and doing my best to see a flop to outplay her.  Problem was, when I limped on the SB, she would go all in.  If I raised though from the SB she would usually fold. I had to be very cautious though doing this as if I over bet it I would have been committed to the pot and priced in to make a horrible call.  In her SB she would usually limp, most of the time I would check and let us see a flop. I would usually bet the flop or turn after she checked to me.  Her eyes would give away her hand on the flop and she rarely bluffed from this position.  I whittled her down to about 20K when I made a big mistake.  She raised all in from the SB for only 16K more.  It didn't matter what the hell I had, I SHOULD always have called there.  It came back to haunt me as she built it back up to around 50K.  Back to grinding...  I got her down to 20Kish again and she gave up, not on purpose, but she waited for a hand and did not use her chips and my fear of doubling her up against me to move all in constantly snatching up the blinds.  She finally committed her stack with her 95suited against my Jack high(cant remember my exact hand) She flopped a flush draw and I thought, great double up time.  She missed and I won!

When heads up with her I had offered 10% of future profits to the looser as a "save".  She didn't understand and declined.  I explained it to her again when she had only about 30K in chips(23%ish of the total) and re-offered it to her again as to give her the benefit of the doubt, knowing had she really understood it she would have taken me up on it... plus it was good karma for me to be kind and relieved some of my anxiety to perform.  She gladly excepted.

I hope I send her 20K one day ;)

$50 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (2nd out of 10 Players)

This was a rebuy tourney.  I was playing like a monkey with no fear or concern.  Seems to work better for me.

At the end I was heads up.  Since the chip leader busted the other two players back to back I was very very behind in chips.  I decided to go all in pre with out looking at my hand until I could have enough to "really play".

January 28, 2007, 4AM: Played 3 hours, 12 minutes, Lost $30.00 at Napa Valley Casino
$3/6 Omaha Hi-Lo

I suck ass at this game.  I got in the game $300.  My 1st 4 hands were monsters.  I end up capping it the 1st hand with a straddle.  Get my low counterfieted and make 2nd nut flush, lose whole pot.  I won't bore you with the other 3 hands.  Pretty much A245 perfect flop, A2KJ miss and TJJQ, top set straight draw get hammered by 35 off.

Those 4 pots were all well over $200 and I had a big piece if not most of them.

Everyone thought I was nutzo maniac as I capped pre, post and on turn.

Gotta love the opportunity.

January 28, 2007, 4AM: Played 48 minutes, Made $160.00 at Napa Valley Casino
$3 No-Limit Texas Hold'em

I booked a damn win in this game!

Was playing many hands pre flop for small raises.

I end up flopping 2nd nut st8 with 64 in late pos when board is 578, 69 is only hand that can beat me.  I end up just letting the guy ahead of me bet off his chips.  I never put in a raise as I 1)dont want to run him off and 2)he may have 69 and I would screw myself and 3)I am a little biatch.

I get out of the game as my Omaha8 seat becomes availble

January 26, 2007, 5AM: Played 3 hours, 12 minutes, Made $97.50 at Ultimate Bet
$16.50 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (4th out of 76 Players)

Got down to 4 handed with about the chip lead.

To get there I got really lucky in a 3 way pot.  I had QQ and was up against KK and AJ.

4 handed we were players Viper_x lonetraveller and tea bone.

lonetraveller, across from me, was a chatty brit with a good attitude and played solid.  He had a bit below ave stack.

Viper_x was on my left and didn't have many chips.

tea bone was on my right and had about the same as me if not more.

I pick up 66 in the sb and raise, viper just calls, we see flop of A75 and we both check, turn is a Q and I bet out small, he just calls, the river is another Q and I check.  He bets 4k into a large pot, looks like a value bet or bluff.  I call and see AA! I should have gone broke with that hand.

Then tea lost a big pot against Viper_x, Viper picked up AA again and doubles through.

We battle 4 handed for a bit.  It was semi perfect for me because tea bag would always give me a pass when we were in the blinds.  So I was really only losing my antes and SB every round.

I don't like raising on the button 4 handed with the chip leader on my left.  It opens the door for a re-raise steal, so I was being patient and really just going all in from the small blind with anything decent, gaining ground slowly.  I did notice that whenever I limped in the SB when Viper_x was in the big blind he would auto go all in.  He did this about 3 times on me.

I finally get a decent hand, AT, in the SB and limp praying he would go all in.  He hesitates and does.  I auto call and see him roll over T5, TRAPPED!!!

But... like my luck has been he hits a 5 and I'm busted 4th.

January 24, 2007, 5AM: Played 8 hours, 20 minutes, Lost $552.00 at Ringos - Spokane
$3/6 Omaha Hi-Lo

I don't know what to say.

I am very frustrated with my results tonight and for the past two weeks.

It is getting to the point were when I sit at a poker table I wonder how each card coming off the deck can make me lose, I am like a shell shocked soldier jumping at every card as if was a gernade.

I also debate slowing down with hands when I run into streaks like this but after discussing it with Daryl it destroys the whole point not to take an edge when it is there, regardless of what the outcomes have been.

I aslo have been doing a major no no which I will stop doing.  Playing these lower limit games has re-opened a bad habit of letting other players see my busted draw/hand.  This is free information for them and is a crack in one's shell.  Showing hands is also bad because when they see how bad you got beat or unlucky for missing such a monster draw they not only sypathize with you but see that you are "running bad" and come after you, compounding the pain.

I must say though I ran incredibly horrible in this game tonight.  I don't want to complain about bad beats but I did not get my fair share.

I debated leaving after losing two pots though.  The 1st was A36Q, the flop was 24Q, I flopped nut low draw, a gut shot straight draw, nut flush draw and top pair.  It was of course capped pre and then again capped on the flop.  You really can't expect a better flop.  The turn brought a Q giving me trips and the river a big brick card.  I got zero of the pot, 22J7 scooped the pot with bottom set.  Needless to say he was broke in less than an hour.

My following hand was even more painful.  I held A345 on a kill pot.  We again capped it pre 9 ways.  The flop could not have come down better with A2J two of my suit.  I had a wrap wheel draw and nut flush draw.  6 of us capped it again on the flop.  Turn was a perfect 9 of my suit giving me the nut flush.  I lead out and got raised, I 3 bet it got capped again and we went into the river 4 ways! The board paired with the J, I was bet into and mucked.  AJ takes down the pot, he only had 3 outs, the case ace and two remaining jack.  The 3rd hand in the pot I did not see but the 4th player had 99Q4, who turned a set and was the capper with me on the turn, this guy only had 3 outs to scoop!

odds on the flop with 6 players!

odd on the turn with 4 players

So this is where I can't ever see a logical reason to slow the fuck down.  On the flop I am 50% to scoop the whole pot.  This means if I am even just heads up with someone and he shows me top set I will break even.  For every additional player in the pot I will carve up his money.  There were 6 players in the hand.  So for every one chip I put in I only need >1 chip to be called to have positive equity.  I was getting and "extra" bonus 5 chips in the pot!
On the turn it gets even more disgusting.  Theoritically I would never stop putting money into the pot, the worst case scenero I could EVER be in is heads up with someone having AA34, worst case odds.  Even so I will only loose the whole pot 1 out of 5 times.  I will always have positive equity on all bets in this situation and the more players in, the better.  I had 5 players calling a capped killed betting round! Again, I see no reason to EVER slow down.  It would be like throwing money out the window.

The rest of my night were hands similar to this.  Having nut low with a re-draw to nut high and 5 players in.  Having Top Two for high and nut low made 6 ways and getting counterfieted to lose the whole pot.  Having a guy quarted on the turn with a dead player with no outs for anything trapped in there, losing 3/4 of the pot to only two cards.  Having nut high, the rest of the field drawing to only low with only 1 fucking card to beat me for high.  Having nut low made with a two pair redraw 5 handed, capping it with my nut low neihbor who has the nut flush better redraw and missing.  Flopping a top end wrap with a flush draw 5 way only to miss and watch A2 back into a wheel.  Flopping nut full house, jamming it with the dumb end full house and a straggler caught in there only to loose half the pot to my trapped full house buddy who backs into a crummy low.  Flopping nut full house and loosing the whole pot to my opponents kicker, an ace, when the case ace hits.

And every situation I jammed the shit out of it.

I was raising and cappping pre with ALL premium starting hands.

What I was doing wrong but right was giving off the image that I was a nut job gambler.  To do this I was capping it with any premium starting hand and more importantly straddling for $6 every single time I was under the gun.  I would also let it be known that I was not looking at my cards when I was UTG and would cap it or at least make it 3 bets if no one else had raised.  Most of the time it would get capped when I would straddle.  I would then play my trash hand the best I could post flop.  Ironically I split many pots during this time and would have lost more money had I not played these hands.

This stradegy is costly, $12 a round, but it accomplishes SO much I can't explain.  1st, it convinces most everyone that you are a maniac and not a rock, 2nd they stop respecting your bets and raises PRE flop, 3rd they question all your bets post flop, 4th it gets a majority of them gambling and playing hands they should not be playing for much longer than they should, lastly and most importantly they get caught up with the action, forget the value of the chips and are desensitized to raises, all raises lose value.  A raise is almost considered a call and a re-raise means possibly a real hand or a big draw during this time.

Everything was layed out perfectly but the cards did not pull through.  I guess in retrospect after writting this I should be happy with the opportunity that was at hand.

I did "blow off" around $100 at the end of the session.  Daryl jumped in the game, he was running hot all night and decided to jam the game up.  I thought, "Ok, I'll cap it with him preflop for about 3-5 hands with anything marginal or better, if I flop something good I'll scoop a monster, if I lose, it will only cost me from $60-$100.
